Information
about The Center
"The Center is an online clearinghouse of
authoritative information about long distance
relationships for separated couples,
researchers, clinicians, educators, and the
media."
The Center for the Study of Long Distance
Relationships began in 1997 as an informal
connection between researchers and clinicians.
Founded by Dr. Guldner The Center first
arose from a need to integrate research on
separated couples from multiple fields including
Psychiatry, Clinical psychology, social
psychology, sociology, marriage and family
therapy, social work, communication, and
military medicine. The individuals in
these fields often were unaware of the research
being done by their colleagues. Each field
has it's own journals and few individuals had
access to or routinely reviewed journals outside
of their specialty. This lack of
integration substantially impedes our
understanding of long distance relationships.
In early 2003, after publishing his book Long
Distance Relationships: The Complete Guide,
Dr. Guldner heard from many researchers and
clinicians that there was a need for a single
clearinghouse of information on separated
relationships. Thus, The Center
moved onto the internet. This move also
allowed couples in long distance relationships
to easily access authoritative information about
their non-traditional relationship.
After The Center was posted on the
internet, Dr. Guldner received numerous requests
to expand the site to accommodate educators and
clinicians as well as the media. The
Center now receives approximately 600
visitors a day - 50% are couples in long
distance relationships, 20% researchers or educators,
20% counselors or therapists, and about 10% members
of the print or broadcast media.
We hope you enjoy The Center and we hope
you find information to help you in your
endeavors.
INFORMATION ABOUT DR. GREGORY
GULDNER, MD, MS
Dr.
Gregory Guldner, a graduate of Stanford Medical
School and Purdue University’s Clinical
Psychology Program, is the leading authority on
long distance relationships. He has spent
17 years researching these relationships and is
the author of the largest and most comprehensive
study of long distance relationships ever
completed. He has published numerous articles
on relationships and sexuality in general and
long distance relationships in particular. He
serves as a peer reviewer and expert for
multiple professional journals and he has
personal experience in separated relationships,
having married his long distance partner of four
years. Dr. Guldner also serves as an officer in
the Army Reserve with expertise in military
related separations. He was deployed to
Iraq in 2006 with the Army and provided
workshops on military separations while
overseas. He is the founder and
director for The Center for the Study of Long
Distance Relationships in Southern
California.
Dr. Guldner first became interested in long
distance relationships as a graduate student in
a PhD program in clinical psychology at Purdue
University. At the time he himself was in
a long distance relationship. Curious about the
research he began to review the available
information. Finding surprisingly little
about the topic in the psychology journals Dr.
Guldner began reviewing journals in sociology,
communications, and the military services.
Noting a clear need for better studies on the
topic Dr. Guldner began a two year project that
became the most comprehensive study of separated
relationships to date. His team examined
over 200 long distance relationships and
compared them to 200 geographically close
relationships on hundreds of topics. Their
research looked at how frequently long distance
couples break up, how intimate their
relationships felt, how likely they were to
"cheat" on one another, and hundreds of other
items -- all in all over 130,000 pieces of
information were gathered. This
study became Dr. Guldner's Masters Thesis and
was published in two professional journals.
After leaving Purdue University, Dr. Guldner
entered medical school at Stanford University,
during which time he continued to review the
available studies on separated relationships and
publish on the topic. In 1997 he created
The Center to help organize information
about long distance relationships among other
researchers. He also wrote the first draft
of Long Distance Relationships: The Complete
Guide which took six more years of
revisions and research before he felt it had
adequately represented the research in a way
understandable to those couples actually in long
distance relationships.
Currently, Dr. Guldner spends much of his time
reviewing research relevant to separated couples
and updating the website. He is a peer
reviewer for several professional journals and
he assists with interviews for the broadcast and
print media. He has been working with the
Army assisting with training for their chaplains
in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr.
Guldner is also an assistant professor of
emergency medicine and pediatrics and the
research director for the emergency medicine
residency program at Loma Linda University
Medical Center in Southern California. He
is married to Amy, his long distance partner of
4 years prior to their moving together, and he
has a son Gavin born in 2004 and a daughter
McKenna born in 2001.
